Canvas Size. The size of the canvas is determined by the composition of the portrait, i.e., the pose, the body length, and other specifics agreed upon by the artist and client. As a rule, the portrait is slightly smaller than life size.
Travel Expenses. The artist's travel expenses, when working out of town, are an additional charge and generally include transportation and lodging. If the artist is traveling to a location with more than one client in the area, the travel expense can be divided between them. If the final portrait is shipped to the client, reimbursement for shipping and insurance is also required.
Payment Procedure. A non-refundable 1/3 deposit is required when commissioning a portrait. However, the artist will not collect a deposit any earlier than one year ahead of the targeted starting time. The anticipated start date is the artist's best approximation of the following year's schedule based upon work in progress. The anticipated start time is not guaranteed, however, and the artist reserves the right to modify her schedule as circumstances dictate.
2. Photographic Session. Photographs of the subject(s) are taken at a location chosen by the client, and the film is promptly developed. Occasionally, more than one photo session may be necessary.
3. Reviewing the Photographs. From the photographs, the artist will choose a limited number of pictures to present to and review with the client. The client will help select the photographs which best capture the subject, both in likeness and in personality.
4. Preliminary Sketch. If the artist deems necessary, a preliminary sketch may be sent to the client for approval of the composition of the painting. Often small, unforeseen changes in the pose or background are necessary once the painting is in progress. The artist reserves the right to exercise a certain amount of "creative license" in determining what changes, if any, should be made to the painting once the painting process has begun.
5. Sittings. Excellent photographs will often eliminate the need for sittings in many cases. However, if the subject is local and available, the artist will request several brief sittings in her studio before completing the painting.
6. Approving the Finished Portrait. The artist is willing to make minor adjustments to the painting as long as these changes do not result in a change of expression or pose, or alter the lighting or composition in any significant way. Upon approval of the portrait, final payment is collected, and the portrait is delivered.
